Ep 24: Sam Leung was playing a zither for the Emperor when he had an asthma attack.  The Emperor was then taken to the Bat Prince who demanded the Emperor to hand him the crown. The Bat Prince also told the Emperor that he (the Bat) would be a much better ruler for he built the Palace by himself. Chor et al arrived at the old entrance on the dessert but couldn’t find the entrance. They then went to the seashore to find the exit, where they found some masked dead corpses floating on the water. One of them, Luk Ching Wah, was still alive, hence Chor et al changed plan and took him to the Peace Mansion. Inspector Ying met Au Yeung Fei again (actually, prevented Au from committing suicide for failing to save the Emperor) and then they paid another visit to Huashan. Scary Nun denied that, but then she paid Yuen Tsui Wan a visit. Yuen greeted his mother who pressed him to find the Emperor’s whereabouts. Scary Nun also barked at her son for not being ambitious enough. Kam Ling Chi paid Yuen a visit but Yuen was being cold to her under the pretext that he still had some unfinished business to do. Poor Miss Kam... she was just too innocent...Chor arrived and asked Yuen to invite all grand masters to devise a plan to attack the Bats. The masters then arrived with their students, which brought a moment of hesitance to Chor and Miss Wah before they greeted each other. Wu Tit Fa, on the other hand, had to be injured in a battle against the Bats before Koh A Lam took care of him, to the jealousy of Miss Kam. Scary Nun barked again asking her student to stay away from Wu. Meanwhile, during that fight, Ting Fung tried to kill Luk Chin Wah but was prevented by Yat Dim Hung, who had been impersonating as Luk so far (Luk didn’t survive his injuries and died while under Rosie’s care).

Chor Lau Heung admitted he was worried about Siu Ching, ep 19

Ep 17: Au Yeung Fei fended off his attackers but fell unconscious. Yuen Tsui Wan saved him and brought him to the Peace Mansion, but Au left again after he regained consciousness. Au Yeung Fei went to Mt Hua Shan and told Scary Nun about the Emperor’s kidnapping. Scary Nun pretended not to care, but later she actually contacted Yuen, asking him (more like barking at him) to look for the Emperor. Yuen consented after addressing the Scary Nun as “Mother”. So apparently, Yuen was the bastard child between the Emperor and Khoo Mui. Meanwhile, Yat Dim Hung poisoned Siu Ching’s food with some weakening powder so that she couldn’t run far. Somewhere else, Chor Lau Heung and Wu Tit Fa had a meal break which was interrupted by some goons beating up some members of the Beggar Clan. Wu finished off the goons while Chor – having no need to help Wu handling the goons – was just annoyed because their meal was interrupted again (must be happening quite often). Later, the beggars took Wu and Chor to their branch quarter to meet Mr Siu, the head of the local Beggar Clan. Chor asked the Beggar Clan to help locate Siu Ching.

Chor Lau Heung was disappointed to learn Siu Ching has left, ep 11

 Ep 11: Yat tried to kidnap SC but Chor prevented that, but not without both swordsmen getting injured. The girls were worried about his internal injuries, such that they actually ignored the poor bleeding Mr Ying...(with the Star Wars theme song as the background, I’m not kidding!). Chor tried to self-heal his internal injuries but failed. SC gave Chor a pill which worsened his condition; making her the punching bag of the three girls. Meanwhile, Yat Dim Hung was rescued by Wah Jan Jan, a Hua Shan student, who had to leave him alone afterwards because Hua Shan women were not supposed to talk to meeeeenn! You gotta feel for Dim Hung here: Jan Jan asked him whether he had any family waiting for him, and he said with glassy eyes that they were all dead.

First time Song Siu Ching (Barbara Yung) met Chor Lau Heung (Michael Miu), ep 1

Ep 1: Chor Lau Heung, Sue, Rosie and Sugar went together to attend Zo Hing Hau’s 50^th birthday. En route, they met a brazen girl carrying the famous Dark Jade Sword (read this fanfiction for CLH's first meeting with SSC). The girl, Song Siu Ching (SSC or SC), meddled with some affairs such that Chor had to save her, but not before ridiculing her for being over confident. In the Zo Mansion, Chor et al. found that Zo’s daughter Ming Lai was sick such that it almost prevented him from having a duel with another swords master, Sit Yi Yan. To ease his worry, Chor sat down with Zo to have a drink that night to celebrate his birthday. They cited their favourite wine poetry ('Invitation to Wine' by Li Bai, Tang Dynasty) and Zo told Chor he was so lucky to befriend Chor. The next day, Rosie went to town for some medicine but she didn’t return home. Worried, Chor visited the Sit Mansion to look for her.

You might notice (or not), that I’ve been inundating this blog with fanfictions from a series called the New Adventures of Chor Lau Heung (TVB 1984). It began two weeks ago when I found the online link to that TV series at Dramanice (thank you, dear subbers! You guys were Godsend!). See, I had a crush when I was 11 years old when I watched a wuxia (martial) series with my cousins. I fell for this beautiful actor on that TV series. I found him very charming, I smiled when he smiled, and I felt the pain when he got hurt (they tend to do that a lot in wuxia series). As time goes by, I then forgot about him. He then retired from the HK TV industry in 1987 to become a business man in the optometry industry. In 2002 he made a comeback, but I didn’t realise it until recently (cos I wasn’t checking the net for him anymore).

The charming actor’s name is Michael Miu Kiu Wai. TVB aired the New Adventures of Chor Lau Heung in 1984 and it has been my favourite series so far, even topping the modern series these days. After 30 years of hiatus, I’m very pleased to report that the series is still worth watching IMO, and Michael is still the dashing Chor Lau Heung that I remembered three decades ago.

Gosh... has it been that long, actually? ...It has. Michael is now 57, but he is still dashing even at his age. Of course he has lines and whats not, but I saw a snippet of his recent series, and he still made me swoon! Heh... he still makes me swoon as I watched his banters with Barbara Yung Mei Ling (my favourite 80s actress, God I wish she didn’t commit suicide on 14 May 1985). Speaking of Barbara, I just learned that Chor Lau Heung 1984 was her second last series before she died; which made this series even more special to me (check this excellent blog post for other Barbara Yung series).

The Wanderer who took her hairpin 

Princess Wing Ching absentmindedly touched her elaborate coiffeur. Something was missing there, and she knew well what it was. It was a gold hairpin dotted with pearls and small diamonds. It was one of her favourite hairpins that were too flashy to bring outside the palace during her adventures that eventually led her to meet Chor Lau Heung, a.k.a. the man who eventually took the hairpin away. Upon returning to the palace after their unforgettable adventure, she was happy to find that the hairpin was still in her jewellery box. She had purposely worn the hairpin that day for the private audience between Brother Chor and Emperor Father. She never expected Lingering Fragrance to choose the hairpin over her, hence she didn't bother to say anything when he properly made leave in front of her family. Oh, he had looked at her alright, but she was still too shock and confused to say anything, not even to wish him a safe journey.

Chor Lau Heung raised his hand to knock on the door. The girl he grew to care for – no...love, not just care for – like no other woman was in that room. She was resting, or perhaps talking to Wah Jan Jan. He wanted nothing more than to enter the room, politely asked Miss Wah to give them privacy, and then hug Siu Ching and never let her go again. But he couldn't do that. He had no rights to do that.

His hand hovered on the door for a while before he lowered it and took a few steps back. His mind flew to the first day he realised there was no future between him and Siu Ching. It was the day he realised that Mr Song was actually the Emperor himself. Prior to that, the wanderer and ladies' man Chor wouldn't have thought of settling down. But then he met the brazen girl Song Siu Ching and grew to like her more than the way he cared for Sue, Rosie and Sugar, his adopted sisters.

After the events in the Legend of the Bats (click here to read all episodes), Princess Wing Ching decided to leave the Palace and travelled around with the Lingering Fragrance. They were finally married, but it doesn’t mean that Siu Ching could easily get rid of her insecurities regarding the three smart girls that Chor had adopted and had lived with him for more than a decade. In such circumstances, what should a girl do then?

Just as You Are

Living on a boat with her husband and four smart and beautiful ladies was not an easy feat for Song Siu Ching, a.k.a Princess Wing Ching, but she managed. Living with her husband alone, she had no problem with that, for that was what she wanted. She left the Palace because she realised that she couldn’t live without Chor Lau Heung anyway. She had been happy living on the boat so far, particularly because Chor did show without any reservation that – even though he cared about Sue, Rosie, Sugar, and Wah Jan Jan – Siu Ching was the girl that he loved.

True, there were times when Siu Ching wondered whether her presence was actually needed on the boat. She excelled in the ropes and sails bit, thanks to her tomboy tendency. The rest of the day, while Sugar was cooking or playing music and Rosie collecting herbs, Siu Ching would just joke around with Chor, play chess (she wasn’t the best player on board; Sue was, after Chor of course), or just leaning on his broad shoulder as he read books. But Chor knew how to show her that she was special. For instance, during chess play, he’d still hold Rosie’s hand when she tried to cheat, but he’d just hold it within a reasonable time limit. But with Siu Ching, Chor’s hand would linger much longer than that, causing her to blush and the other girls to smile knowingly. When he taught her about the technical aspects of sailing, he’d position himself behind her and envelope his arms to hers, practically hugging her, as he showed how to tug the rope. He didn’t do that to Jan Jan; he was just standing or kneeling next to her at a close, yet respectable distance, as he showed her some roping technique.

Vegetarian dumpling recipe

I love dumplings. I love it so much that I learned how to make it myself so that I didn’t have to depend on my lovely Chinese friends who can be too busy to satiate my dumpling cravings. But my dumpling journey has been a bumpy one, until recently when I improved my dumpling making skills. I have concluded that I love pan-frying my dumplings with just a little bit of water; it results in crispy bottom and translucent upper part that are just divine. I first got the inspiration from watching one of Poh's shows on ABC, and after trying this method, I'm totally in love with the results (and Poh is such a lovely chef as well, it doesn't hurt...).

Ingredients:

Vegetarian paella

Our favourite vegetarian paella, proudly home-made

Our favourite vegetarian paella is Remy’s in Malvern, Melbourne. We’ve tried to imitate it countless times and never made it close enough. Until tonight, that is, when we followed Omar Allibhoy’s tips which we modified for a vegetarian twist.

Ingredients (for 2-3 people)

Olive oil

½ onion

½ red onion

1 leek (the white part)

Chopped red and green capsicums (or red chilies if you don’t have capsicums)

Carrots, sliced

Mushrooms, sliced

4 garlic, crushed

Green peas or broad beans or lima beans or edamame (or all of these)

Okras, cut into 2 cm ish
Sundried tomatoes
Capers

1 tsp smoked paprika powder

Rosemary and thyme

1 crushed or grated tomato, optional

3 cups of vegetable stocks (I put two blocks of stocks)

500 mg saffron, toasted

Chopped parsley

1 cup of callaspara, bomba or valenciana rice

Lemon wedges to serve
